A gorilla permit is a national document or card issued by govern-mentally body which allows a traveler of above age of 15 years to trek mountain gorillas in their natural environment which allows you to have close view of one with mountain gorillas. Trekking mountain gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda takes place in three National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. A gorilla permit in Uganda is issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority where as in Rwanda Development Board.

You require a gorilla permit to trek Uganda gorillas found in two National Parks of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Volcano National Park in Rwanda. When to book a gorilla permit
One needs to contact us to advise you on when to book your gorilla permit. It is agreed that for Peak or high seasons(June, July, August, September, December, January and February) , you need to book your gorilla permit in Uganda and Rwanda at least 3-4 months in advance while in low seasons( March, April, May, October and November), you can even book it there and then since their availability is always sure deal. Gorilla trekking safari is guaranteed when you acquire a permit in both countries Uganda and Rwanda.
How much does a gorilla permit cost?
A gorilla permit in Uganda costs $600 per person per trek where as in Rwanda gorilla permits costs $1500.
A single gorilla permit can only be used once (single day), by a single person. Buy your gorilla permits or secure your gorilla permit in Kampala (the capital of Uganda) at the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) headquarters by paying USD $600.00 per person for foreign non residents, USD500.00 for foreign residents with working permits and shs250,000 for East African Citizens. In Rwanda you can get permits through the Rwanda Development Board offices in Kigali or Ruhengeri at $1500.00.
Gorilla Families found in Bwindi impenetrable national park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park hosts over 14 gorilla families in Uganda which are located in the Northern part and southern part of this tropical rain forest. The northern part of Buhoma and Ruhija has Mubare, Rushegura, Habinyanja, Bitukura, Oruzogo and Kyaguriro which is for research. The southern sector has Kahungye, Nshongi, Mishaya, Businye, Bweza and Nkuringo. Mgahinga National Park has one gorilla family called Nyakagezi but this group keeps on migrating to Rwanda and if you are interested in this gorilla family, permits are sold on ground and you need to contact us for availability. We can advise you on the best gorilla family to trek once you tell us your interest as well.
Gorilla Trekking Experience
The number of people allowed to go gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda is restricted on a particular day. This is done to ensure least behavioral disturbance to the mountain gorillas as well as reduce the risk of them catching contagious human illnesses. A maximum of 8 people are allowed to trek each gorilla group per day. That restriction makes it competitive to book gorilla permits especially during peak seasons. It is therefore necessary to book gorilla permits in Uganda and Rwanda as early as possible. We strongly advise you book at least 5 months in advance to ensure that you can track on the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda, especially if you plan to trek during the peak season. You’re allowed to have about one hour with gorillas at close distance but to trek on different families which took about 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on which family you’re allocated too.
