Tracking Chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest is a totally different experience from that of the Mountain Gorillas. Nyungwe Forest National Park is located in southwest in Rwanda which takes about four and half hour’s drive from Rwanda capital. Nyungwe Forest National Park is known as a home to 13 species of primate, including an estimated 500 Chimpanzees and of which has been habituated for the chimpanzee tracking adventure, some chimpanzees are found in the main Nyungwe forest, and others are in Cyamudongo forest located in East of Nyungwe forest.
Trekking chimpanzees in their natural environment is enriching experience in Rwanda; which begins in three station centers Uwinka, Gisakura and Kitabi which commence at early as 4.30am and at 5am. Chimp tracking gives you an opportunity to have close observation with them of about one hour in their natural states which share 98.6% DNA of human being, and you will be able to see their real life setting and also you will be able to hike and see some other tree species. Many butterfly species do exist within the park; you also are able to meet other primates other than the chimpanzees and some other mammals such as the large groups of Colobus Monkeys as you sights and sounds of this rain forest when in the season, and you can see Wild Orchids, and plants and trees that make up this vast Rain forest.
The habituated chimpanzee are 90 in numbers of which 60 are in Nyungwe forest which has given the magnitude of the forest and terrain it offers lesser chances of seeing the chimps whereas the remaining 30 are found in Cyamudongo forest which harbors the smallest number of chimps and s which offers you most successful sightings given the small size that be covered to find the chimps in any part.
