Uganda is one destination in the world with the highest density of primates these include the gorillas, chimpanzees and many other species of monkeys, there are also nocturnal like pottoes, bush babies and galagos. Itinerary for 8 Days Primate Holiday in Uganda
Day 1: Drive to Kibale forest and Bigodi swamp experience
Day 1 of 8 Days primate holiday in Uganda begins with a pick up from your hotel or home, a 6 hour journey to Kibale Forest National Park it is a scenic drive going through the tea plantations, forests and snow capped peaks of the mountains of the moon, have lunch in one of the restaurants in town, drive to the lodge then prepare for the afternoon visit to the Bigodi swamp and community ecotourism project that is managed by the community that live around the forest, to view primate species that live on the forest edge and the local community to learn about their ways of life and traditional practices. Meal plan: Lunch/Dinner and Accommodation: Kibale Forest Camp (Budget Option), Isunga Lodge (Mid-Budget Option) and Primate Lodge Kibale (Luxury Option).
Day 2: Chimpanzee habituation adventure
Chimpanzee habituation experience is a full day activity that starts at 6am to visit the chimpanzee as they leave their nests and begin their feeding. This is a process the chimpanzees go through to get used to human presence and after some time these will eventually be ready to have tourists visit them on regular basis and not bothered by their presence. With the help and guidance of the park guide you are able to learn about behavior and character of individual chimpanzee as you follow them and observe them feeding and there food kinds. The following are important to have on chimpanzee habituation day, Drinking water, Packed Lunch or food, rain gears, sun lotion, bud spray, gloves, hiking boots, long pants and long sleeved shirts, long socks and flash light is handy since you leave before sun rise and return in the evening. Day 3: Chimpanzee tracking and nocturnal visits
Begin with breakfast then transfer to visitor reception center at Kanyanchu for briefing then chimpanzee tracking that starts at 8am, there is a general briefing before being assigned a Uganda wildlife ranger, the tracking ends at about midday. The visit is limited to one hour when you come across them. Bring along rain gear, sun lotion, bud spray, gloves, hiking boots, long pants and long sleeved shirts, long socks and drinking water. Take some time off in the afternoon, prepare at 6.30pm for the forest to do the nocturnal walk in search for galagos, bush babies and Bosman’s pottos the nocturnal primates, tree hyrax and the experience of being in the jungle in the dark with flood lights. Day 4: Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Day 4 of the primate holiday in Uganda we transfer to Bwindi impenetrable forest driving through the scenic kigezi highlands and forests with stop for photos of the landscape and well terraced gardens and lunch break in kabale town. Day 5: Gorilla habituation experience
Gorilla habituation like chimpanzee habituation is the process by which gorillas get used to human presence and eventually these become comfortable and then they accept regular visits. All the families that are regularly visited underwent this process and that is the reason they’re not hostile in the presence of tourists and this progressive process will take up to two years at most for the gorilla to accept and be comfortable with people being around them. Gorilla habituation experience in Uganda is a 4 hour activity and with guide taking you the whole process educating you about the behavior and character of every individual gorilla. Breakfast is as early as 5:30am because we have to be at the meeting point by 7am to meet the guide, escorts and trackers. Day 6: Gorilla tracking experience.
Early morning breakfast at 6:30am then set off for briefing at the park visitor where you will be grouped eight, only an 1 hour is allowed for the interaction with the mountain gorillas, have drinking water, lunch, rain gear, sun lotion, repellent, gloves, hiking boots, long socks, long pants and long sleeved shirts for the trek . After a wonderful experience with the mountain gorilla, we are back on the road to our next destination that is the Golden monkey mountain. Day 7: Golden monkey trekking
Golden monkeys are found in the bamboo zone of Mountain Mgahinga in Uganda located in Mgahinga gorilla national park, These primates have a golden color on their fur which is very clear when the sun reflects on it, the tracking takes about 3-4 hours, an hour with them, Breakfast time is 6am thereafter drive to the park headquarters for briefing, we need to carry water, lunch, rain gear, sun lotion, bud spray, gloves, hiking boots, long pants and sleeved shirts, long socks. Day 8: Drive to Kampala or Entebbe International Airport
After breakfast we get on the road for long drive to Kampala or Entebbe International Airport, along the way we make a lunch break at either Mbarara or the equator center for craft shopping and souvenirs depending on the time and then back in Kampala, late evening to your hotel or airport.
