Mount Elgon Hiking Safari Overview

Mount Elgon is a 4,321m high of extinct volcano which in prehistoric time stood taller than Kilimanjaro does to day. Although the mountain straddles the Kenya boarder on its loftiest peak, Wagagai lies within Uganda and is best ascended from the Ugandan side. Spectacular scenery is the main attraction for hikers on this oft-neglected and relatively undemanding mountain. Attitudinal vegetation zones range from montane forest to high moorland studded with the other-worldly giant lobelia and groundsel plants. There are a variety of forest monkeys and small antelopes while the bird checklist topples 300 species.
